OLIVIA BATCHELDER

I have been an artist all my life, and that has been my joy!  I made many beautiful things, and I worked toward the goal of unraveling complex ideas. I am honored to have time to ponder.

Nature is the world where we live our lives. Looking deeply into nature’s secrets presents an opportunity to form ideas that illuminate the artwork. I am seeking hints that bring a deeper understanding of our world, and that which connects us to one another.

My subjects are the rhythms of nature. My working method is Dot and Line. My materials are silk and dye. My surface is white silk stretched tightly.

Silk is luminous and dye is transparent. I set up the artwork for a resonating note, then lay down several horizontal bands of different widths, which sets up a framework for the composition. The widths serve to hold a place for dots and lines to populate. Thus, a background emerges. There is a wait, then dot and line can join in.  The whole composition is one of imagery layered over many tiny marks, repeated over and over again. One dot sets the placement, two dots together begin a line. The story is built thru multiple layers of dot and line.
